User testing
To better understand the product, the user, and how they interact and communicate, I created a user test with scenarios and tasks. The focus was on observing how users approached sending and receiving a file, identifying both strengths and pain points in the process
Userflow
Visualized a flow for the current service to get a better overview of the service and the interface. This helped to better analyze the flow to spot potential improvements
Competitive analysis
In the analysis I looked at other similar services and collected insights containing strengths and struggles that could be beneficial for the optimization of Transfer.
Collected insights
The interface lacks a sense of flow and feedback
Users wanted more visual
Progress indicators and confirmations were missing
Drag and drop was a commonly expected interaction.
Navigation between steps or pages wasn’t always clear
When password protection was active, it appeared separately from the link and then users often forgot to copy both
Clients vision and role
The goal is to build trust through clarity and ease of use
The service should reflect the client’s brand and values
The experience wasn’t as intuitive as users expected
The purpose and value of the service weren’t immediately obvious to users
Many users didn’t notice any information about size limits
Uploads failed without clear explanation
Users had to guess through trial and error, which caused frustation

Flow structure

After
For the flow of sending files, I restructured and added a few key steps to improve clarity and usability. Mandatory choices were introduced to help users understand what actions are required before they can move forward. I also included notifications so that the sender gets informed once the receiver has accessed the files. For the file request feature, I designed an entirely new flow to extend the service and add more value. This makes it easier for users to request specific files directly. There’s also an option for the receiver to add a password, which strengthens the security around the shared files.
Solution
Added improvments
Send files
To improve communication, an optional email notification is introduced. When selected, a field appears for the sender to enter their email and receive confirmation once the file has been accessed.

Users can copy each link individually or both at once with a single button, making the process quicker and reducing the risk of missing links. Visual feedback confirms the action and adds clarity.
